Scoring 101
In person, students had access to score keys and scored at a scoring station, which was monitored and managed by supervisors. However, now that students are working remotely, we have developed a new method for scoring that has proven to work better (in terms of test results), than using a score key. Students now score using page references. A step-by-step guide into scoring is below.
When given a PACE, students should complete about the first 20 percent of a PACE (which might be the first about 5-8 pages), which teaches content then asks questions, about the information, right on the same page.
After doing this, students will arrive at their first CHECKUP in their PACEs and are tested on the information they have learned so far. Before students can complete a checkup, a parent or guardian must look over the work they have done so far to make sure that students have completed all the activities and have read all the information and written page numbers next to each question, saying what page they found the answers on. This page referencing strategy is the key to scoring.
After a parent or guardian has checked to make sure students have written page numbers and completed all activities, then they sign the checkup and give the student permission to complete the checkup. Checkups should be done without looking back for answers, they are a mini test to see what the student has learned and remembered so far.
After completing a checkup, students are then able to look back at the previous pages and check their answers. While checking their answers, students should write which page the correct answer to that question is on. This can be written in the page’s margin, next to the question number.
Next, parents should check the checkup again and sign at the end of it to confirm that the student has written page references next to all questions, when scoring, marked any incorrect answers wrong and THEN corrected them.
Students then continue to use this same page referencing method for the rest of the book.
At the end of the book, students will arrive at the SELF-TEST. The self-test should be completed and scored the same way as the checkup. The difference is that the self-test is testing students on all the book's content, whereas the checkups were testing students on what they had learned so far in the book. After the self-test has been completed, scored and signed, then a student is ready to take the PACE TEST for that book.
